This 28-hour workshop series is intended for English language arts teachers as an introduction to the CSU Expository Reading and Writing Course (ERWC) for grade twelve and the ERWC curriculum modules for grades nine through eleven. The workshops are generally four days scheduled over several months, although the schedule may vary by region. Aligned with the California Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy, the course emphasizes the in-depth study of expository, analytical, and argumentative reading and writing. These rich, adaptable resources, developed by a collaborative group of CSU and high school faculty and specialists, are designed to help students develop the academic literacy skills necessary for success in college and the world of work. Approved as a “b” course satisfying the English subject requirement for UC and CSU admission, the ERWC may be adopted as a senior English course. The modules for grades nine through eleven may be integrated within existing English courses at those grades.

Teachers attending this workshop will receive:
Course materials and other professional books
Curriculum for preparing students to meet the demands of college-level classes
Strategies for helping students read and write rhetorically
An opportunity to calibrate school-level expectations with college-level expectations
Certification to teach the ERWC as a senior year course

Please read:  This registration is only for the optional Continuing Education Units (CEUs) that can be earned with this program. One CEU is equivalent to ten contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education/training experience under responsible, qualified direction and instruction (definition of the International Association for Continuing Education and Training-IACET). Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are based on the number of sixty-minute contact hours for a course or program. (Example: If a course or program meets ten contact hours, one CEU will be awarded.) To receive CEUs, the participant must attend all the hours required for that CEU value. Earned CEUs may be useful in maintaining certification or licensure. They may also document the participants’ continuing professional education for an employer, association or credentialing agency. Cal Poly Extended Education maintains a record of the CEUs participants have earned through programs and courses approved for CEUs. CEUs are for non-credit courses or programs. They cannot be converted to quarter or semester hour credit and they cannot be applied to degree programs. CEUs will not be awarded retroactively. Registration for CEUs must occur by the deadline specified for the program. If a participant does not meet the attendance requirements to earn the CEU’s for which they have registered, a “NC” (non-credit) grade will be issued. Refunds will not be approved for participants who do not meet the attendance requirements. CEUs earned will be recorded on an official Cal Poly transcript, which must be ordered and paid for by the participant. An email notification will be sent to participants once CEUs have been recorded and transcripts can be ordered.
